The 55th Grammy Awards were held last night and the Steep Canyon Rangers captured the coveted Best Bluegrass Album for their Nobody Knows You album. The group had some outstanding competition with Dailey & Vincent, The Grascals, Noam Pikelny and Special Consensus all nominated for the bluegrass music award.
Mumford & Sons captured the Album of the Year Honors for their album Babel. The British folk/rock/roots band has brought fans together from many genres with their Babel album and their tour performances. In just a few short years, the group has gaines massive recognition and acceptance across many genre borders. The group also captured Best Long Form Music Video award for "Big Easy Express."
Bluegrass falls into the American Roots category that includes Americana, Blues and other roots music styles. One of those styles is Folk Music and The Goat Rodeo Sessions by Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile captured the trophy in the genre. the album also captured the Best Engineered Album, Non Classical award engineered by Richard King.
The Recording Academy also paid tribute to bluegrass and country legends that have passed on. Included was recognition of NEA National Heritage Fellow Mike Auldridge's contribution to the music. Auldridge passed away last year. Auldridge was a great innovator in the use of the Dobro, influencing the development of contemporary bluegrass and country music and paving the way for other Dobro musicians such as Jerry Douglas and Rob Ickes. Auldridge was on the 1994 Grammy award winning The Great Dobro Sessions.
Woody Guthrie was also honored as the Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package award went to Woody at 100: The woody guthrie Centennial Collection on Smithsonian Folkways Recordings.
